(This post was originally written in the first couple of days after FO4’s release.)
I’m not very far into Fallout 4. I’ve mostly been pottering around with it, trying to find usefulthings to report to you, YOU, my favourite reader. So I’ve yet to gain any other companions than Dogmeat, the stupid idiot Alsatian. I hate him.
Let me declare my uninterests. I don’t like dogs. Dogs are awful animals, too stupid be let outside on their own, too yappy to be inside a building, and every single one of them is five seconds away from biting a child’s face off. (“Oh no, not MY dog, he’s the gentlest, sweetest thing!” Yeah, that would be how every dog that bites a child face off is described by the owners, just with a “was” in front.) Dogs are rubbish, and everyone who disagrees is wrong.
So Dogmeat didn’t have a strong headstart winning over my love. But he could have. I’ve tolerated dogs in videogames before, although never without knowing they’d have been better if they were a cat. Dogmeat had a chance. But good grief, what a disastrous piece of crap he is.

“Dogmeat’s found something!” No he hasn’t. The game most recently announced this to me when the dreadful animal was in a room empty but for a couple of mannequins. Okay, I suppose, technically a couple of mannequins are “something”, but if the game plans to alert me on this basis, it’ll get a little tiresome.
So maybe I should issue him a command to go find something. Or maybe I’ll die of old age in happiness, instead. E on the dog, select to talk to the dog, then wait to see if the next menu will appear, and if so, choose “fetch”. Ooh, a little cutscene before I can do anything! Finally, I can now ask him to look for something useful. “Dogmeat didn’t find anything.” INCLUDING THE BOX OF STUFF HE WAS STOOD NEXT TO WHEN I ASKED HIM.
Or how about the way he opens doors I don’t want opened? That’s good. Or when he barges into a small room and knocks everything over around me? Or how he interferes in fights, gets himself wounded, and uses up my stims? But best of all is the way he runs around my feet, constantly making me think another mole thing is attacking. And worst of all, you can’t kill him. I’ve tried. Dismissing is the only option. Begone, Dogmeat, you useless pile of bones.

“The Wasteland is home to a variety of dogs, from vicious wild curs to trained attack hounds.”— Loading screen
Dogs are animals that can be found in Fallout 4, and act as companions towards humans. There are a few different distinct breeds of dogs, Dogmeat for example is a German Shepherd Dog that may be a companion to the Sole Survivor.
BackgroundEdit
Most commonly seen as feral beasts that plague the wastes and kill livestock, they are necessary for many struggling wastelanders. There is also the rare cases of domestic breeds that act as companions towards their human counterparts.
Humans are the only species known to truly tame and domesticate these canines. Although other types of sub/meta-humans show an interest in doing the same, dogs of all types, including feral dogs, are well-known to attack or flee from them on sight.
CharacteristicsEdit
They are fiercely loyal to their owners. Before the war many of them had fur, but now many of them have lost it and have begun to look pink. Some mongrels will attack on sight but can be pacified.
BiologyEdit
Through the 200 years since the Great War, dogs have remained relatively unaltered by radiation. Other than that, there is no reason to believe that the biology of dogs in the Fallout universe differs from dogs in the real world, besides having a rougher appearance than domesticated dogs, unsurprising in the harshness of the wasteland.
Two mutated counterparts of dogs can be found in the Commonwealth: the ghoulish mongrels and the FEV-exposed hounds.
Gameplay attributesEdit
Dogs, unlike in previous Fallout games, have special animations where they can grapple enemies down to the ground and hold them in place allowing their masters a brief advantage in combat.
VariantsEditAttack dogEdit
Attack dogs are domesticated dogs, with a degree of training. They are usually seen in raider camps or with Gunners, Minutemen or Brotherhood of Steel patrols. They are sometimes equipped with various pieces of dog apparel.
Pack dogEdit
Found in the Bradberton Amphitheater, these dogs are owned by The Pack. They will turn hostile if The Pack is attacked. These dogs can either be mongrels or junkyard dogs, and often have dog armor equipped. They can spawn battling in the cage fight arena against other entities, such as Pack captives, or be wandering around the amphitheater.

Dogs are creatures commonly found in the Commonwealth in Fallout 4. They are cousins of wolves. Their relatives can be encountered at Far Harbor.
Background[edit | edit source]
The following section is transcluded from Dog. To modify, please edit the source page.
The domestic dog (Latin: Canis lupus familiaris) is a canid that is known as man's best friend. The dog was the first domesticated animal and has been widely kept as a working, hunting, and pet companion. Though most breeds of dogs remain largely un-mutated by radiationexposure, some modified or mutant varieties do exist.[1] The Master created centaurs by mixing dog, human and brahmin in the FEVvats.[2] Dogs were also subject cyberization, which resulted in cyberdogs.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Mongrels are always found in the wild, and are hostile by default. They travel in in packs of 2-4, usually containing a single alpha mongrel which is stronger than the others. It is a free-for-all when they attack, attempting to swarm and overwhelm their prey, but they will retreat if gravely injured.
On the other hand, dogs that are found among humans act as guard dogs; as such, raider dogs attack any non-raider on sight and alert their masters of their presence. Dogs also travel with Brotherhood of Steel and Commonwealth Minutemen patrols.
Variants[edit | edit source]
Appearances[edit | edit source]
These dogs appear only in Fallout 4.

Raiders on giant armoured dogs ride out across the Commonwealth Wasteland in a new mod for Fallout 4, which bears the remarkable name of Ruff Riders. I do like post-apocalyptic wastelands to be weird and horrible B movie oddities, and murderers atop wardogs clad in scrap armour including metal shades and a horn, yup, that’ll do for me. The mod scatters a few dozen Ruff Riders around the place, and if you off ’em you can make your own regular-sized dog buddy dress up like the big nasties. You’ll need a different mod if you want to ride dogs yourself but one does actually exist so…Ruff Riders plonks 40-odd dog-riding raiders down across the Commonwealth, waiting to eat your face.
I am delighted by these dogs. I prefer my post-apocalyptic worlds to be a little grotesque and weird, trash and oddities like The Roller Blade Seven, Cherry 2000, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Rats: Night of Terror. Sims 3 wedding mod. Sure, Fallout has mutant giants, megacrabs, and that retrofuturistic vibe, but it is a little boring these days. People riding armoured wardogs? That’s more like it. I’m in a trashy mood this week.
Lead doggodev “BlahBlahDEEBlahBlah” released the Ruff Riders mod on Sunday, and you can download it from Nexus Mods.
If you want to ride dogs yourself, “BlahBlahDEEBlahBlah” released another mod last year which lets you do just that. 2 bdrm apartments for rent.
